Neurotoxins work by temporarily blocking the signals between nerves and muscles.
When injected into specific facial muscles, they prevent those muscles from contracting with full force. This softens the appearance of lines and wrinkles that form from repetitive expressions like frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows.
The treatment doesn’t freeze your face or eliminate your ability to express emotion. Instead, it reduces the intensity of muscle movements that create creases over time. The result is a smoother, more relaxed appearance while still allowing natural facial movement.
Here at Audebon Med Spa in Audubon, NJ, Dr. Wiener uses precise injection techniques to target only the muscles contributing to unwanted lines, leaving surrounding areas unaffected. This approach maintains balance and harmony across your face.
Common Concerns Treated With Neurotoxins
Neurotoxins are incredibly versatile and can address a wide range of aesthetic and functional concerns.- Horizontal forehead lines that appear when you raise your eyebrows.
- "11" lines between the brows that create a tired or angry look.
- Crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes.
- Bunny lines across the bridge of the nose.
- Gummy smile that shows excess gum tissue when you smile.
- Dimpled chin that appears puckered or uneven.
- Platysmal bands in the neck that create vertical lines.
- Lip flip to subtly enhance the upper lip without filler.
- Smoker's lines around the mouth.
- TMJ disorders that cause jaw tension and discomfort.
- Bruxism (teeth grinding) that leads to headaches and tooth wear.
- Dr. Wiener evaluates your facial anatomy and concerns during your consultation to determine which areas will benefit most from treatment.
Botox® Vs. Dysport® At A Glance
Both neurotoxins are FDA-approved and work in similar ways, but there are subtle differences that may make one more suitable for your needs.
Neurotoxin injections have been the gold standard for decades. They’re highly precise, making them ideal for targeting small, specific areas like crow’s feet or the “11” lines. Results typically appear within 3 to 5 days and reach full effect in about 10 to 14 days.
One formulation has a slightly different molecular structure that allows it to spread more easily. This makes it effective for treating larger areas, such as the forehead. Some patients notice results a bit faster, sometimes within 2 to 3 days.
Both products last about 3 to 5 months, though individual results vary. Dr. Wiener will recommend the neurotoxin that best suits your anatomy, treatment goals, and how your muscles respond.
Customized Treatment Design
No two faces are alike, and Dr. Wiener doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every treatment plan is customized based on your facial structure, muscle strength, skin condition, and aesthetic goals.
During your consultation, Dr. Wiener evaluates how your muscles move when you make various expressions. He identifies which muscles are overactive and contributing to the lines you want to soften. From there, he determines the precise dosage and injection points needed to achieve balanced, natural-looking results.
Some areas require more units than others. For example, treating the forehead may require a different dosage than treating crow’s feet. Dr. Wiener adjusts the plan based on your unique anatomy and desired outcome.
If you’ve had neurotoxin treatments before, let Dr. Wiener know what you liked or didn’t like about previous results. This helps him fine-tune your treatment for optimal outcomes.
Your Neurotoxin Experience
Before Your Appointment
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for a few days before treatment to minimize bruising. Aspirin. Ibuprofen. Fish oil. Vitamin E. If you’re on prescription blood thinners, check with your doctor first.
Arrive with a clean face. Free of makeup. If you’re wearing makeup, you’ll be asked to remove it before treatment.
During Treatment
The procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Dr. Wiener uses a very fine needle to inject small amounts of neurotoxin into the targeted muscles. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch or slight pressure.
No numbing is typically needed, though ice or a topical numbing cream can be applied if you’re sensitive to injections.
You’ll remain upright during the treatment, and Dr. Wiener may ask you to make certain facial expressions so he can precisely identify the muscles to treat.
After Treatment
You can return to most normal activities immediately. Avoid lying down, bending over, or engaging in strenuous exercise for 4 hours after your appointment. This helps prevent the neurotoxin from migrating to unintended areas.
Don’t rub or massage the treated areas for at least 24 hours. You may notice small bumps or slight redness at the injection sites, but these typically resolve within an hour or two.
Bruising is possible, but not common. If it occurs, it’s usually minor and can be covered with makeup after 24 hours.
Results, Longevity, & Ongoing Care
You won’t see results immediately. Neurotoxins take time to relax the targeted muscles.
- 2 to 3 days: Some patients begin to notice subtle softening.
- 7 to 10 days: Results become more visible as the neurotoxin takes effect.
- 10 to 14 days: Full results are apparent. This is when you'll see the maximum smoothing effect.
Areas with stronger muscle activity, like the forehead, may wear off slightly faster than areas with less movement.
To maintain smooth, youthful skin, most patients return for treatment every 3 to 4 months. Regular treatments can actually extend the longevity of results over time, as the muscles become trained to relax and lines soften with consistent care.
Dr. Wiener will recommend a treatment schedule based on how your skin responds and how long your results last.
